"What Does Social Justice Look Like?" WINDOW DISPLAY CONTEST

Chico State Student Organization Takes First Place

The Chico State University student organization Kappa Delta Pi has been named the winner of the Window Display Contest, sponsored by the Chico Peace and Justice Center. Kappa Delta Pi is "a national honor society that intends to unite future teachers in learning about the field and volunteering within the community to bring fun and educational activities to students". The winning window display has been reassembled and can be viewed at the center (526 Broadway) during the Christmas Preview and through the month of November.

The contest required that each organization create a window display to answer the question "What does social justice look like?" Kappa Delta Pi's display focuses on social justice beginning in the classroom. Ashlee Winright, CSUC student, explained, "By starting in the classroom, we can teach the ideals of social justice, by starting small and recognizing all individuals. When they leave the classroom, they will grow up and display those ideals in society." Emily Alma, one of the judges, said about the window display, "My heart just opened to it."

The display created by the North Valley Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) received an honorable mention for being the Most Inspirational. Alma described the FOR window as creating a "...very peaceful world, a world of dignity, cultural beauty and diversity." Other judges on the panel include Mayor Andy Holcombe and Joe Person.

Eight organizations participated in the contest, with each creaion on display for one week. Jim Henson, contest organizer, said, "I enjoyed viewing the visions of the participating groups. Many of the displays dealt with children and education. Cultural diversity and religious harmony were also reoccurring themes throughout the contest."
